Manatee County health insurance when your life crosses the Sarasota line

Lots of Manatee families live on one side of the county line and see doctors on the other. I help them pick a plan whose network follows them there.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam Jaber, a licensed health insurance broker. I'm based up in Tampa, and Manatee is part of the area I cover every week, from Palmetto and Ellenton down through Bradenton, the county seat, and out to Lakewood Ranch.

The people I help here buy their own coverage: realtors, pool and lanai contractors, nurses who went per diem, couples in their late fifties who stepped away from corporate jobs. I do this by phone, and that reach extends to 36 states. For the broader bay area, see my Tampa page.

Manatee residents can still get a nationwide PPO

The marketplace PPO in Manatee costs close to double the next option, and one company is the only seller. There's another way in. A private nationwide PPO is available through me, and if your household is healthy and paying full price, it's often the plan I'd quote first.

Manatee's plan list, and the line that complicates it

The federal plan file lists 136 individual medical plans for Manatee County from 5 insurance companies, the shortest list of the Tampa Bay counties I cover. Only 14 are PPOs. Take a 40-year-old shopping silver: the least costly marketplace PPO still runs 91% more than the least costly non-PPO silver plan. That's a smaller gap than in the counties to the north, but it is still nearly twice the price.

Then there's the county line. Lakewood Ranch sits partly in Manatee and partly in Sarasota County. Your plan choices depend on where you live, but your doctors may be across the line, at Sarasota Memorial or a practice off University Parkway. Many local plans don't stretch that far.

Scenario 1 of 3

A Lakewood Ranch couple whose doctors are in Sarasota

Picture a couple in their late fifties on the Manatee side of Lakewood Ranch. She sells real estate. He left an engineering job to consult. Their cardiologist and their primary care doctor are both in Sarasota, and Sarasota Memorial is the hospital they trust.

The first thing I'd do is check each plan's network against those three names, because a plan sold in Manatee may not include them. If the household is healthy and earns too much for a credit, I'd price a private PPO, since a nationwide network removes the county question. It's underwritten, so their answers about health decide if they're approved and whether anything is excluded.

Scenario 2 of 3

Your income qualifies for help

If what you earn falls inside the tax credit range, a marketplace plan is usually your most affordable choice in Manatee, and nothing outside the marketplace can use that credit. Florida's regulator approved average individual increases of 34.1% for 2026 before subsidies, so the credit matters more than it used to. Just make sure the plan reaches your hospital. Blake Hospital in Bradenton says it is the county's only Level II trauma and burn center.

Scenario 3 of 3

Somebody in the household needs ongoing care

If you or your spouse sees a specialist regularly or depends on a specific medication, keep the marketplace in front. Plans there must take you, regardless of history, and can't charge more because of it. A private plan offers neither of those protections. The task becomes finding the Manatee plan that keeps your specialist, even if that specialist is in Sarasota.

Questions Manatee County clients ask me

Straight answers, no sales pitch.

How many health insurance plans are there in Manatee County?

The federal plan file lists 136 individual medical plans for Manatee from 5 insurance companies. Of those, 14 are PPOs, and one company sells all of them.

I live in Manatee but my doctors are in Sarasota. Will my plan cover them?

It depends on the plan. Plans are chosen by where you live, but networks vary, so check every doctor by name before you enroll. I do that for you.

Is there a PPO available in Manatee County?

Yes. The marketplace PPO costs nearly twice the alternatives here, so healthy full-price buyers usually ask me to quote a private PPO with a national network instead.

Is there a fee to use you as a broker?

There isn't one. I'm paid by the insurer after you enroll, at no extra cost on your premium.
