You can still get a nationwide PPO in Wisconsin through me, though Walworth County's marketplace sells none. Here is how Lake Geneva investors, many with doctors and family in the Chicago area, plan coverage year to year.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I broker health insurance from Tampa under licenses in 36 states, and I help Wisconsin landlords and investors buy their own coverage by phone.
Picture an investor who lives in Williams Bay and owns four lake cottages and a small motel-style property she converted to weekly rentals, all within a few miles of Geneva Lake. Summer weekends sell out to Chicago families months ahead, fall is steady, and January is mostly maintenance. Her parents and her longtime doctor are in the northwest Chicago suburbs, about an hour away. She's mulling a sale of one cottage that has nearly doubled in value. As a Walworth County resident, she buys on HealthCare.gov, and the local menu has no PPO at all.
Walworth County has 46 individual medical plans for 2026: 28 HMOs and 18 EPOs. There's no PPO. Both of those plan types generally pay outside their network only for emergencies, which matters if your doctor is across the state line in Illinois.
Through me, you can still get a nationwide PPO in Wisconsin, underwritten on your health, and its national network can treat your Illinois doctor the same as one in Elkhorn.
Marketplace help is based on household income for the coverage year, including net rental income: weekly rents minus cleaning, booking fees, utilities, property taxes, insurance, repairs and depreciation. Help runs up to four times the federal poverty level.
A sale changes the year, because the credit is built on modified adjusted gross income and a gain on a sold cottage generally lands there. A bad year works the other way. Wisconsin didn't adopt the ACA's Medicaid expansion, but its BadgerCare Plus program reaches adults at incomes up to 100% of the poverty level, whether or not they have kids, and the marketplace credit generally takes over above that. Depreciation-heavy years can bring an investor surprisingly close to that line on paper.
The credit only works on HealthCare.gov, so in Walworth County you're choosing an HMO or an EPO. The key question is your doctor. If your physician and the hospital you'd use are in Illinois, check which Walworth plans, if any, include them before you choose by price.
Next step: Tell me who your doctors are and how last year's Schedule E came out, and you'll see the Walworth plans that fit, credit included.
A closing can lift the year well above the credit line. If you've taken credit in advance and the gain raises your income, you'll settle the difference when you file, and starting with tax year 2026 there's no limit on that repayment. Sort out coverage before the cottage goes on the market.
At full price, an HMO or EPO with a local network is a lot to pay for an investor with doctors in Illinois. A private nationwide PPO often fits better. Your health answers lead to an approval, an approval leaving out one condition, or a decline, and healthy applicants frequently pay less than the marketplace's full rate. We compare benefits plan by plan.
Next step: Phone me before the listing goes up, and we'll lay a nationwide PPO quote beside Walworth County's full marketplace prices.
When a new roof and a quiet January drag net rental income down, look at where the year lands. At or under 100% of the poverty level, BadgerCare Plus may cover you. Above it, the marketplace credit applies. When bookings recover, update your income.
Next step: In a lean year, talk with me before you apply for anything, and we'll pin down the household's real number.
Keep that coverage on HealthCare.gov at any income. Its plans take everyone and can't charge more for a diagnosis. In Walworth County the work is confirming your specialists are in an HMO or EPO network.
Next step: List your specialists and medications, and you'll see which Walworth County networks include them.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
No. Walworth County's 2026 marketplace plans are HMOs and EPOs.
Only if that doctor is in the plan's network, or in an emergency.
No. Up to 100% of the federal poverty level, BadgerCare Plus is available to adults; above that line, the marketplace credit generally is.
Yes. If you're healthy, I can arrange one privately.
Share your county, the people on your plan, what last year's Schedule E looked like and any sale you have in mind. I'll fit the coverage to that year and price it.
