You can still get a nationwide PPO in Kentucky, even though every medical plan on kynect is an HMO. Here's how builders whose kids study out of state, or whose jobs cross the river, are covering everyone.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber, and health insurance is the only thing I work on. I'm in Tampa, I hold a Kentucky license, and everything we do happens on the phone.
Building in Kentucky often means a family that doesn't stay put. A Lexington remodeler's oldest might be at college in Tennessee. A Louisville builder routinely pulls permits across the bridges in Jeffersonville or New Albany. A Northern Kentucky contractor's customers live as much in Ohio as at home. For years, a company plan through a bigger builder may have hidden the problem. Once you're running your own firm and buying through kynect, it shows up fast.
Through me, you can still get a nationwide PPO in Kentucky, which is the simplest fix for a family spread across states.
kynect, the state's marketplace, has 85 individual medical plans for 2026 from 3 insurers. All 85 are HMOs. That matters because an HMO usually pays nothing for an out-of-network visit unless it's an emergency, while a PPO keeps paying when someone sees a doctor outside the network, with a larger share on you and no referral. Underwritten private plans supply national PPO networks, with premiums based on health.
Before anything else, I'd ask you to list where each person on the plan will need routine care this year. If the answer is "home, all of us," a kynect HMO may be perfectly good. If one answer is a dorm three states away, or a job site across the Ohio River where you'd rather not drive back for a sick visit, the HMO starts costing you in a way the premium doesn't show.
Price is the other half. kynect's federal premium tax credit depends on household profit for the year, after lumber, concrete, subs, trucks, equipment, permits and insurance. And for those past its reach, KFF reports the average benchmark premium for a 40-year-old in Kentucky climbed 33.5% from 2025 to 2026.
This is the family this page is about. A student on your Kentucky HMO is usually covered for emergencies near campus and not much else, so strep throat, a sprained ankle or a counseling visit can mean a bill or a drive home.
If your household is healthy, a medically underwritten nationwide PPO solves it for everyone at once. Each of you answers medical questions on the application, and the carrier then writes the policy, turns it down, or writes it with a specific earlier condition carved out. For a healthy family, that screening is how the premium can end up under kynect's full rate, and the student's campus doctors can be in network. Policies define benefits differently, so we compare them line by line.
Next step: Tell me your county, everyone's ages and where your student lives during the school year, and I'll price a nationwide PPO against the kynect HMOs.
If everyone gets care near home and your household qualifies for the credit, a kynect HMO is very likely the least expensive answer, since the credit can't follow you to a private plan. Confirm your doctors are in the network, and tell kynect promptly if a strong building season raises your income.
Next step: Bring last year's return and this year's signed work to a quick call and we'll pick a plan and an estimate.
Ongoing treatment for anyone in the family is a reason to stay on kynect, full price or not, because its plans can't refuse an applicant or charge more for a diagnosis. And if the company has a lean year, Kentucky's Medicaid expansion covers adults with household income up to 138% of the federal poverty level. Workers' comp, separately, only pays for job-site injuries.
Next step: Call me if either applies and we'll choose the right coverage for this year.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
Usually only for emergencies. Every kynect medical plan for 2026 is an HMO, and HMOs generally don't cover routine care outside their network. A nationwide PPO does, at a higher out-of-network cost.
No medical PPOs for 2026; all 85 individual medical plans are HMOs. A healthy family can still get a nationwide PPO through me.
