Here's how plumbers and pipefitters in Colorado are saving money on their health insurance this year

Colorado still offers nationwide PPO coverage outside the marketplace. For a Grand Junction plumbing couple approaching retirement, though, this fall brings the state's largest premium increase. Here's how I'd help them choose.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I'm a licensed Colorado health insurance broker, and I work entirely over the phone. We can discuss your coverage while you're waiting for plumbing supplies.

Imagine a husband and wife living in Grand Junction. He's 59 and has owned a one-truck plumbing shop for twenty-five years. His jobs include water heaters and softeners around Orchard Mesa and Redlands, burst pipes after freezes, downtown home renovations, and occasional orchard or winery work in Palisade. His 57-year-old wife manages appointments and bookkeeping. They've purchased their own insurance year after year, watching the price climb. This fall's renewal increase is their biggest yet.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Colorado

For households in that position, I can still offer nationwide PPO coverage in Colorado and provide a Mesa County quote.

In 2026, Mesa County offered 49 marketplace medical plans from 3 insurers: 38 HMOs and 11 EPOs. Neither Mesa County nor any other Colorado county had a marketplace PPO. Those networks generally restrict nonemergency benefits to participating providers. A private nationwide PPO works differently. Both applicants complete medical underwriting, and the policy contributes toward outside-network care. If you're healthy and want access to Denver or Salt Lake City specialists, I'd price that option too.

Why Grand Junction feels it most

Colorado's Division of Insurance approved an average 10% increase in individual premiums statewide for 2027. Mesa County, designated rating area number 5, faces the largest increase among Colorado's nine areas at 15.5%. If you're a couple in your late fifties paying without subsidies, that's a substantial increase to your insurance budget.

I'd focus first on your projected household income. For a plumbing business, calculate net earnings by subtracting trucks, fuel, parts, fixtures, tools, licensing and liability coverage from receipts. The assistance you receive depends on your estimate for the coverage year.

Scenario 1 of 3

We're close to the line for help

Many established plumbing shop owners face this exact decision. When your income estimate qualifies you for financial help, Connect for Health Colorado generally offers the lowest premiums because Colorado's assistance is available only there. Colorado Premium Assistance began in 2026 for households below 400% of the federal poverty level and continues through 2027. You don't claim that assistance on your taxes, and you won't repay amounts already received if your income later exceeds eligibility. Federal tax credits work differently: underestimate income and you might owe money when filing. Update your estimate promptly if a busy spring of repiping increases earnings.

Scenario 2 of 3

One of us has some health history

Before recommending anything, I'd want to understand your medical condition. Marketplace coverage cannot reject you or increase your premium because of a pre-existing condition. Private nationwide PPO eligibility is different and depends on the specific health issue. That doesn't automatically rule out private insurance, though. Tell me what's involved, and I'll explain both possibilities without guessing.

Scenario 3 of 3

The shop had a good year and we're both healthy

When household income exceeds the assistance limit, Mesa County marketplace coverage comes at full price after Colorado's largest increase. That's a good reason for healthy couples to request a medically underwritten nationwide PPO quote. Both people answer health questions, after which the insurer can approve, exclude a prior condition or decline coverage. Healthy applicants may save against full marketplace premiums while accessing a network beyond the Western Slope.

Where the Colorado figures come from

  • Connect for Health Colorado is Colorado's state-based marketplace; CMS posts its plan data in the state-based marketplace public use files Source
  • Mesa County's 2026 marketplace offered 49 medical plans from 3 insurance companies, 38 HMOs and 11 EPOs, with no PPOs (count of the CMS state-based marketplace 2026 plan and service-area files) Source
  • Mesa County is Colorado rating area 5 on its own Source
  • Final 2027 individual premiums rise 15.5% in rating area 5 (Grand Junction MSA), the largest increase of Colorado's nine rating areas, against a 10% statewide average (Colorado Division of Insurance, Sept. 22, 2026) Source
  • Colorado Premium Assistance began with plan year 2026 for households below 400% of the federal poverty level; Connect for Health Colorado is the only place Coloradans can qualify for and receive financial help with coverage (Apr. 24, 2026) Source
  • Connect for Health Colorado says Colorado Premium Assistance continues for 2027, and that open enrollment runs Nov. 1, 2026 to Jan. 15, 2027, with Dec. 15 the deadline for coverage starting Jan. 1 Source
  • Colorado Premium Assistance doesn't have to be claimed on taxes, and losing it because income changed doesn't mean paying back past savings (Connect for Health Colorado) Source
  • Self-employed people estimate net income for the coverage year and update it when the business changes; reporting too little can mean paying back some or all of the premium tax credits Source
  • Under the health care law, a marketplace plan can't reject you or charge you more for a condition you had before your coverage started Source
