Compare more than the monthly premium
A lower monthly bill can come with different costs when you need care. Compare two plans using your own benefit documents and spending assumptions.

What the numbers mean
Expected annual cost = 12 monthly premiums + your estimate of covered in-network cost sharing + your estimate of excluded and out-of-network expenses.
Covered high-use reference = 12 monthly premiums + the documented in-network out-of-pocket maximum. This is not a cap on all bills. Premiums, excluded services, out-of-network charges and other items may fall outside the maximum. A limited-benefit product may not have an equivalent maximum at all.
The deductible is part of cost sharing, not an extra charge to add again after estimating that spending. Do not combine an individual maximum with family spending, or compare different plan years.
An illustrative comparison
| Input | Plan A | Plan B |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly premium | $400 | $500 |
| Expected covered spending | $2,000 | $1,000 |
| Expected excluded expenses | $0 | $0 |
| Expected annual total | $6,800 | $7,000 |
| Entered in-network maximum | $8,000 | $5,000 |
| Premiums + in-network maximum | $12,800 | $11,000 |
Here, A costs $200 less under the expected-spending assumptions, while B has a lower covered high-use reference. Different care needs can change the comparison.
