Colorado truck drivers

Here's how truck drivers in Colorado are saving money on their health insurance this year

Colorado drivers still have access to nationwide PPO coverage. If your work takes you from the Western Slope into other states, it's worth considering. I'll explain how a Garfield County owner-operator can compare that option with what's available through the marketplace.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I hold a Colorado broker license and work exclusively with health insurance. Most truck drivers reach me by phone while they're waiting at a work pad or stopped somewhere to put chains on.

Let me describe the kind of owner-operator I'm talking about. He lives in Rifle, has already paid off his truck and switches between a flatbed and a tanker based on the load. During busy periods in the Piceance gas fields, he's hauling produced water, frac sand and drilling pipe to sites up on the mesas near Battlement Mesa and Parachute. When drilling activity drops, he turns to I-70 freight. That might mean heading east through Glenwood Canyon, climbing Vail Pass and passing through the tunnel toward Denver, or driving west past Grand Junction into Utah. For much of the year, keeping chains in the truck is simply part of working those roads. At home, his wife has a part-time café job that doesn't provide insurance, and their middle-school daughter lives with them. The family uses doctors around Rifle and Glenwood Springs.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Colorado

For someone driving that kind of schedule, my first point is simple: Colorado still has nationwide PPO coverage available, and I can arrange it by phone while you're sitting right in your truck.

That option is particularly important in Garfield County. In 2026, its marketplace offered 26 medical insurance plans from only 2 companies, and every single plan was an HMO. Except for emergencies, HMOs generally don't cover treatment from providers outside their networks. That means a walk-in visit for a sinus infection in Salt Lake City, or an out-of-state follow-up after a small injury during a trip, might leave you paying the bill. PPO coverage can pay part of those expenses without requiring a referral. If you're in good health, I'd compare the HMOs with a nationwide PPO that uses medical questions to determine its price.

A year set by the gas fields and the passes

What a truck earns can change quickly with drilling activity, natural gas prices and mountain weather. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation freight program, the mandatory chain-carrying period lasts from September 1 until May 31. A shutdown through Glenwood Canyon or over Vail Pass can wipe out a day's earnings. Your household's projected net income for the coverage year determines premium assistance. For an owner-operator, that means load revenue after deducting fuel, any truck payment, tires, permits, insurance and brake work following a season of steep mountain driving. We want that estimate to be as accurate as possible, with updates whenever your workload shifts.

Premiums are changing as well. Garfield County belongs to rating area 9, where final rates approved by the Division of Insurance increase 11.8% for 2027. That's higher than Colorado's statewide average increase of 10%.

Scenario 1 of 3

Mostly local pad work, home every night, and we qualify for help

When most of your hauling stays within Garfield County and your household income qualifies for assistance, Connect for Health Colorado will usually be the lower-cost choice. That's because premium assistance is only available through that marketplace. Colorado also provides Colorado Premium Assistance, a state program introduced in 2026 for households earning below 400% of the federal poverty level, and it remains in place for 2027. Since all the local plans are HMOs, our main job is checking their networks carefully. We'll look for your regular physician in Rifle, the hospital in Glenwood Springs and any specialists you would actually visit in Denver or Grand Junction.

Scenario 2 of 3

More I-70 freight and out-of-state runs, and we're healthy

When gas-field jobs slow down, you may find yourself hauling freight toward Utah, Denver or farther away. Your trips expand, but an HMO's provider network doesn't necessarily expand with them. If your household income also moves beyond the assistance range, you'll face the full 2027 premium for every marketplace plan in Garfield County. For a family in good health, I'd compare those prices with a medically underwritten nationwide PPO. Everyone applying must answer health questions, after which the insurer can approve coverage, approve it while excluding one existing or previous condition, or decline the application. Healthy applicants often receive premiums below the full marketplace price, with access to doctors beyond a limited part of Colorado. If someone in your household has an ongoing health concern, I wouldn't automatically rule out private coverage. The details matter, and I'll help you review the available choices before deciding.

Scenario 3 of 3

The rigs moved out and the year went thin

Income from gas-field hauling can fall suddenly when jobs disappear. If your household starts earning less, update the estimate you gave Connect for Health Colorado so your assistance matches your situation. Save the settlement records and repair invoices that support the change. When contracts pick up and income rises again, adjust your estimate upward too.
